The Great Irish Famine of the 1840’s was 19th Century Europe’s worst humanitarian crisis. At least one million people died, approximately 12.5% of the country’s population, and a further 2.1 million people emigrated in the decade from 1845 to 1855. Some regions of Ireland were disproportionately affected, among them Skibbereen, which lost over a third of its people to disease, starvation and emigration.
This 55 minute documentary is Skibbereen’s account and also, in the broader context, Ireland’s story.

Skibbereen town hosted the first National Famine Commemoration held outside Dublin. This 120 minute special feature includes highlights of the week’s Famine-related events: music, drama, talks and walks by local and international participants.
